The Debrecen Sports Centre was established in 2000 with the aim of assuming a bigger role in the region’s and the country’s sports scene through the complex management of Debrecen’s sports facilities.
The portfolio of facilities, unique in all of Hungary, are made up of the Sports Complex in Oláh Gábor Street – comprising the István Gyulai athletic stadium, the Sports Hall with a capacity of close to 1,000, the natural and artificial grass football pitches and the football stadium with a capacity of 10,000 – as well as the Debrecen Sports Swimming Pool, the Debrecen Ice Rink and the country’s second largest multifunctional arena called Főnix Hall. The sports facilities together with the Sport Hotel*** provide a full range of services.
The Debrecen Sports School was integrated into the Sports Centre portfolio in 2006. It provides opportunities for sport, training and regular competitions for some 1,000 children. Currently it operates with eleven divisions in nine branches of sport (athletics, judo, handball, basketball, football, ice skating, badminton, triathlon and swimming), thus being the number one base of junior athletes in the city. We regard creating the best conditions for the health education of children as well as for modern training and coaching methods as an important objective. The leadingsportsmen competing in our colours are regarded by the young people attending the Sports School as their role models.
Since its establishment the Debrecen Sports Centre has organised more than thirty world competitions and numerous prominent sports events in some twenty branches of sport along with mass and leisure sports events, and has won extensive recognition from the profession for their successful management.
The doors of the Sports Centre are open to the general public interested in mass sport and an active lifestyle. It is of great importance in our passive and low-exercise everyday lives to make sports not only a privilege for top athletes but also provide the opportunity for the general public to be able to pursue sports in facilities meeting contemporary needs in every respect.
